Advice
& Negotiation
Advice: as and when you
need it, in relation to all aspects of contractual relationships – before,
during, and afterwards.
Negotiation: maybe you just want a little guidance or a second opinion on how to handle a negotiation yourself? Maybe you're looking for someone to handle a negotiation for you? Or maybe even you've started yourself and now feel you may be a little out of your depth (it does happen)? Whichever it is, the chances are that our extensive experience in this field can help.

Egos
Ltd is a Consultancy, specialising in Commercial law
- particularly Contract & Intellectual Property, and focusing on the IT, and
the Entertainment and Media industries.
Our
business has been focused on this area since 1994, and over the course of the
past 13 years we have considered the contract terms of well over 200 agencies;
our client-base includes well over 1,000 contractors and more than 30 agencies
and consultancies (ranging from new start-ups to the long-established),
together with numerous software houses, resellers, and other IT-related
businesses.
As
“egos”, we wrote a regular legal
page in Freelance Informer, a magazine which has a large readership
amongst Computer Contractors, from early 1996 until the magazine’s closure in
late 2001. The archive of these articles (over 140) contains a wealth of advice
on a variety of issues affecting IT contractors and can be viewed
here.
As
a result, we therefore have a very broad experience, both of the nature of such
contracts and the relationships they govern, and of the wide variety of things
which can go wrong - the consequences of many of which could be have been
avoided by suitable contract terms.
We
believe our extensive experience gives us an excellent overview, and we regard
ourselves as very closely in tune with the realities faced by those working
within these industries.
Work
is generally handled by e-mail, telephone, and fax.
We
neither accept nor pay commission – so if you are recommended to us, you will
know it’s because of our reputation; and if we recommend someone else to
you, you’ll know it’s not because we stand to gain in some hidden way from
doing so. May be a quaint way to do
business, but it’s how we like to be dealt with
ourselves.
We
hold £500,000 Professional Indemnity insurance cover - although we don't
expect to have to use it!
"With
a general scientific background, I qualified as a solicitor in 1976. I practised as the principal/senior partner of my own firm of
solicitors from 1978 until 1994, employing a staff of up to 40.
Highly
'technologically aware', I developed advanced computerised
systems for the handling of high volume contract-based legal work, and as a
result won contracts with major public companies in the consumer credit sector.
I
was an early member of Clarity (founded for the promotion of Plain English in
legal documents).
I
was elected a Fellow of the
During
my time in practice as a solicitor, I gained extensive experience of Contract,
Commercial, and Intellectual Property law, in addition to a thorough awareness
of the commercial realities of the business world, through carrying the
responsibilities of managing my own business.
In
1994 I ceased general legal practice as a solicitor in order to concentrate on
Consultancy, and I now specialise in Contract,
Intellectual Property, and Employment Law and related issues, using e-mail as
the preferred means of communication.
This
move breathed fresh life into my career, and I can honestly say that I love
what I do, and find it easy to establish mutual respect with the clients I
encounter – many of whom become friends.
I'm
also a member of the
Society
for Computers and Law, and of the
TRUST
group (an association of consultants) (you'll also find a links to these
sites on my 'links' page)
I'm particularly
interested in making practical knowledge of the law accessible and intelligible
to non-lawyers.
The law affects us
all, and most of us have some degree of genuine interest in it. It's my
experience that people want to know about the law - it concerns them, it
affects them, and quite frankly it belongs to them.
The law governs their
lives, the law deems them to know all about it, and they have a right to know!
For this reason, I
firmly believe Legal documents should be straightforward and
understandable."
